Employability, Democracy and Sustainable Communities on top of the survey on the thematic agenda of the 8th UNESCO Youth Forum

For the first time in its 14-year history, the UNESCO Youth Forum is designed with young people. Through a series of online surveys and consultations, young women and men in all regions of the world can decide on the Forum’s thematic agenda, preparatory process, format and overall programme.

An integral part of UNESCO’s General Conference, the Youth Forum is a unique space allowing youth delegates from across the world to share their experiences, exchange ideas and submit their proposals to representatives of 195 UNESCO Member States, thereby contributing to the global debate on UNESCO’s strategic orientations on youth.

Phase 1 of the online consultation was successfully concluded allowing youth to identify the Forum’s thematic agenda!

From 14 to 24 February 2013, 1,895 young women and men across the world responded to the online Survey on the theme of the Forum, selecting two priority thematic areas between the 7 themes suggested.

Employability & Democracy and sustainable communities were the top two choices with respectively 515 respondents for the first one (majority in Europe and North America and in Africa) and 512 respondents for the second one (majority in the Arab States, Asia and the Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean).

I searched for an image that could sufficiently communicate gender equality
without biases or stereotypical representation, and being in a networked world,
I came across this image. It is an amazing natural phenomenon captured by Kent
Smith while on a cruise in Alaska. He calls it 'Merging Oceans'. There is a
permanent white line at the point where these tides meet because they have
different densities. If you sail with me on this cruise, then you may also agree
that this is fitting description of gender equality.

Why? Because we could together see this permanent white
line as a recognition of similarities between women and men - boys and girls -
equal strenghts, capabilities, freedom to be, to aspire to flow... But this
white line could also be a symbol of the celebration of differences, another
type of freedom - the freedom for women and men to meet as equals in the same
board rooms, offices, communities, newscast, movies or even advertisement,
despite their differences.

This same image also bears much significance to gender and
media which is the purpose of this GSIM resource. For as women and men meet as
equals, the media, regardless of technology used, as a part of their function to
reflect diversity in society, should play a role in opening up thinking on
gender equality and gender-based stereotypes in and through media. Therefore, if
you are still with me, this permanent, always visible, white line also
represents the function of media and the role of all journalists to make gender
equality issues transparent and understandable to the public.

- Alton Grizzle

In the debate on the inequality between men and women, the
media pays an important role since they contribute to influencing and shaping
the perception of people, their attitudes and behaviors, especially in the
relations between men and women.

Forest Whitaker’s Harmonizer Programme in Uganda

Northern Uganda has suffered a civil war for more than twenty-two years. This chronic instability has caused a dramatic surge in internally displaced persons and has also created tens of thousands of child soldiers, who have been abducted and forced to serve in militias. Among the many challenges that these youth face are lacking access to education and resources. The conflict has also created a technology gap in the region, causing youth to be cut off from modern technologies such as computers and internet connectivity.

In 2012, the PeaceEarth Foundation (PEF) (an international NGO founded by Forest Whitaker, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and Reconciliation), established the Harmonizer Program in Northern Uganda. The Harmonizer Programme is a three-year programme that targets young people who are motivated to be pioneers in peace-building and agents of positive change within their communities. The programme educates youth in conflict resolution, leadership, community-building, and ICT and social media skills so that they can spearhead peace and development efforts.

There were over 6 million phone subscriptions in 2012, still in many places, paper and books are luxuries. Phone screens are like e-readers, and phone lines are the bridge from home to school. To find out if teenagers in South Africa would read stories on their mobile phones, Steve Vosloo, manager of the Nokia-UNESCO partnership, launched the m4Lit (mobiles for literacy) project and Yoza Cellphone Stories was born. Launched by the Shuttleworth Foundation, the stories include mobile novels, Shakespeare and other classic authors.
