Dear folks,

As  you may know, an open debate ' Do mobile phones change social development  more than economic development" is planned to take place from 4 April.

Prior to this, I thourght it might be useful to collect audio and visual materials, as well as documents related to the utilization of mobile phones for socio-economic development.

You can either introduce the URL directly in your message or you can post your materials as group video and files.

UNESCO to help community media with mobile content production

UNESCO is analysing the potential for mobile-friendly content to be generated by community media in the context of developing countries. As the use of mobile media steadily grows, the Organization is conducting a study on the possibility to shape alternative audio and video productions by community media into mobile content.

Hi Mika,

Great initiative!

Definitely, the possibilities of mobile-governance are being explored for social as well as economic development, giving equal stress, especially in the developing part of the world.  Following urls will lead to some useful reads in this respect.

Hi Mlka,

The first url will lead to pdf document, which is a paper titled M-Governance: A Framework for Indian Urban Local Bodies by Diatha Krishna Sundar and Shashank Garg I just now checked the url by clicking it in the message above. Its ok. Some times the browser setting of the computer used to access the url or the version of PDF reader in the system may be the problem. Would you plz try to access it from another system.

Thank you Karina for the interesting URL. I found an article talking about the development of citizen journalim (http://www.mobileactive.org/covering-protest-and-revolution-lessons-al-jazeera-innovation-and-mobile-citizen-media). Mobile and social netwrok took indeed triggered revolution in the role of government, citizens and media. I will launch another debate on citizen journamisl and mobile phone.

Hello,
does anyone have information about the how mobile phone systems works?

I mean: there are plenty of issues related with privacy, surveillance and remote control in the mobile phone technologies, but the biggest problem is that this type of technologies lacks of public documentation.

Technical references and articles about "the dark side" of mobile communication-tracking devices will be really useful.

Thanks, Franco.

For mHealth information the K4Health website has a mHealth eToolkit with a list of resources, publications and websites that are mHealth specific. I hope this isn't too late!

Hi Mika,

I had been involved in financing and bringing to market easy to use local language input methods for Indian languages for the past 11 years. Easy to use Indian language keyboards and keypads are essential for the many native language speakers in India.

I have witnessed the mobile revolution happen there. However, I feel that there is so much more that can happen in terms of access and usability if people are given tools in their languages that are intuitive.

Here is a link to my work last year with designing local language phones for India:
http://usof.gov.in/usof-cms/GagendaPdf/Brahmi_Phones_to_bridge_the_urban_rural_divide_DoT_USOF.pdf

There had been significant interest from the mobile industry about such a product. However, due to issues regarding partnership  agreements with my Indian partner, my efforts have met with a dead end.

I continue to strongly believe in the importance of addressing local language issues in all developing countries. The numbers are great and so is the business opportunity.

Regards,
Farah
