Discussions > News about the Global Open Access Portal projects?

Teemu Leinonen

Dear all,

I was wondering if there are any news about the Global Open Access Portal -project announced some months ago. In the UNESCO web site there was a call for consultants:

http://portal.unesco.org/ci/en/ev.php-URL_ID=31316&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html

What are the next steps with the project?

Is there a site where one could follow-up and maybe contribute to to the process too?

Best regards,

Teemu Leinonen

Thanks for this posting. The Global Open Access Portal (GOAP) is a work in progress, and we are in the process of identifying the individuals/institutions for different regions, as indicated in the call. Once the site is developed with some relevant information, it will be launched.

We hope that contribution from the community will be an important component, but this will be covered in the next phase (i.e. after the initial development).

Sanjaya,

I know there was a poste on this work sometimes ago, but could you please add links that refers to those discussions? So that those who are joing the discussions midway could have access to them and catch up.

Sanjaya,

The GOAP project's aim as a first stop for all seeking information on open access is truly noble. Concerns have however been raised on whether this would be a dublication of other ongoing efforts (like OpenDOAR, ROAR etc). In my opinion, the GOAP project has to add value beyond existing projects, particularly in light of developing countries that have many projects in their infancy, as well as provide avenues for networking, best practice and related values. I also believe that GOAP can benefit from data from these existing projects. (no need to re-invent the wheel)

I look forward to the launch of the portal.

Regards,

Ruth

Dear Ruth,

Thanks for sharing your views. In fact, it is exactly in this line of thought that the portal is being developed. The objective is not to duplicate but to build on the existing knowledge to provide one stop analytical information on OA status in countries all over the world.

Dear Ruth, I agreed with your comments. In Latin America, there are a lot of initiatives and projects related to open access, digital libraries and free access to information. I'll wait for the portal just to tell my experiences.

Regards from Argentina.

Dear David I recognize that you are right because the if people don't have access to the previous link they would be aware about the discussion then give their ideas also.

thanks kalo

People often asked us if there is where to look for 'everything' about open education. We point them to http://oercommons.org -- The browse all tab shows resources and the landscape tab shows organizations. For a graphical portal see http://www.mindomo.com/view?m=ae09f9a0d0d8432d9b60c953b463a44c These are USA-centric but can be expanded. Do we really need Yet Another Portal? -- Regards, Jacky hood, Coordinator, Open Doors Group

This publication, recently completed gives a summary of what OER is, and what has been happening over the last 10+ years. It is aimed mainly at people who have not been engaged in the field and need to have access to a rather comprehensive background on the topic. It is divided up to ease the volume or level of information that is needed. This report mentions many of the projects from around the word.

Dear Sir(s) It appears that a lot of energy and effort will be wasted by the community in reinventing the wheel and ultimately it would remain a dream to have a free virtual University that would help underpriviledged/ lifelong learners dream of having higher education. Being a regular visitor of Wikipedia, Wikiversity and links they provide, I find lot of very good study materials are ready for use for education at degree/post graduate/research level. All materials at Wikipedia/Wikisource/wikibooks/wikiversity are under CC /GPL license. MIT OCW/ Stanford University's Open learning Programmes are also quite rich in their content. There are many other resources also available in OER archives. I believe, the first thing we need is formulation of syllabus for each level and then look at the resources you already have so that job of creation of resouces at the initial phase comes down to the minimum. Of course, there would be scope for improvement always. But consider starting the work than remain confined in debates.

UNESCO launched the Global Open Access Portal (GOAP) on 1 November 2011 along-with the OER Platform and the re-vamped Open Training Platform. The Open Access portal has country reports on the status of Open Access, and links to various initiatives around the world. We intend to keep the Portal up-to-date with the support of the OA Community, and therefore, we welcome your comments, suggestions and sharing of information on events, initiatives, etc related to Open Access.
