Pretty cool timeline of when newspapers "might" go extinct due to a variety of factors including the - 'development of open platforms'.
People have said newspapers were going out when the internet arrived and way before that when TV was introduced. Maybe this time

I think paper media would not go extinct but go online instead. They can continue their influences on the net.

Well.... it is a possibility in time, but there may be some surprises in time, I also think alot of paper media will move their contents online and restructure their business models. Internet is the main driving force behind this, and so how far each region fulfil this timeline will depend on the availability of this infrastructure.

I believe Newspapers will remain till the time print media remains. They may have their internet versions as well as most of the established newspapers have. The Newspapers will remain not for the news alone, but also for the Articles, the opinions of the readers and for various other items they contain. Basically investigative journalism got its boost from Newspapers only. Further each newspaper represent the interests of a particular class. Ordinary Americans may never know what a Cuban intellectual feel or what is the real picture of Cuba today. Indians are mostly unaware of realities at China, Cuba or USA. Internet and TV bring some news no doubt but a local newspaper contain much more. I would like that LETTHERE BE NEWSPAPERS SIDE BY SIDE WITH THE INTERNET.

Blogs--or the facility for commenting on issues in newspapers online may be one reason
for print newspapers going out of style. And online readers are eager to participate and to have their say
on matters that concern them. Just as use of emails has made the post office practically redundant in my
country, so too, newspapers in the next two decades or so, will become antiquated.

The main reason that so many newspapers have failed is due to the loss of advertising revenues. Subscriptions and single copy sales did not cover the costs. Craigs List killed the want-ad business and online advertising destroyed other ads. The collapse of the housing market meant that another major source of advertising died. The new coupon companies like Groupon are another erosion. Newspapers, blogs, and other online media can sell advertising but the rates for internet advertising are much lower.
Newspapers also suffer because the search companies pull in content from the newspapers without compensation. So reporters and journalists get laid off. This is self-defeating for the search companies because they are drying up the sources that feed them. I think we will see a day soon when Google, Bing, and Yahoo start hiring reporters and journalists.
OER can only be a substitute for newspapers when it is written by credible sources with journalism training.

Here in China, some newspapers go bankrupt. I think one main reason is the wide-spread internet access. Needless to say that the net change Chinese people's way of thinking, behaving etc. Espcially the appearance of blog and micro-blog, same like twitter or facebook, many newspaper or news-agencies post the lastest news there. So fragmented information would gradually take article-news away. The way of getting to know the outside world would be varied.

I do not agree though I agree that internet news-papers or e-papers have their own advantages. However, one has to agree that there are several type of Newspapers in existence, at least , in India and the truth is the number of Newspapers and readership have gone up and not down. When I want to read really local news which have no relevance outside the locality or region/state, I rarely find them in internet. There was a time when people thought that printed papers, magazines etc. will no longer be there with the advent of internet . But the reality is different. Moreover, developements are uneven. Very little has been done so far for computing and creating material in Indian languages. You would hardly find a site made in any Indian language. I believe there will be many nations in the third world where you would find similar situation. But why do we worry after all on the future of printed Newspapers/Magazines! Are we not more interested in diseminating knowledge and learning through internet and virtual university for the under priviledged of the World. I stress on the word 'underpriviledged' because priviledged people would still prefer real University and real class rooms in stead of 'virtual' and they would do it not only for the sake of learning but also for the sake of maintaing their priviledged position in the society. With regards.
